The Indian Lake Resort in suburban Bloomingdale Illinois is just 25 miles west of Chicago’s Loop, but an absolute world away in terms of mood and experience. Once you step on the grounds a feeling of tranquility and comfort sets in and this mood is strengthened by the warm smiles and genuine greetings cheerfully offered by the entire staff. It is truly one of the friendliest spots on the globe.

Contributing to the congenial sense is the unique and soothing design. Renowned architect Don Erickson, a master student of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the Indian Lake Resort. The Wright influence can be felt throughout as the six story hexagonal structure studded with rich wooded beams and spectacular skylights seem to rise from the surrounding prairie grass. Erickson aimed to build a hotel that didn’t feel, or resemble, the typical hotel. No boxy rooms or predictable spaces are found here. Each of the 300 plus guest rooms has a sense of space and the feel of being in a cottage. The six Penthouse Suites are nothing short of spectacular offering with each a wet bar, Jacuzzi, wood burning fireplace, expansive outdoor deck, and of course the wonderful signature angles and skylights that conspire to make this property so special.

Did I mention the 27 holes of championship golf? The resort’s home course, Blackhawk Trace has hosted several pro events as well as offering golf-minded guests and locals a thrilling and relaxing day on the greens and fairways.

The Atrium Lounge is one of the guest’s initial experiences. The great open space is flanked by guest rooms and houses the Cave Bar, one of the four food and beverage outlets at the resort. As the name would suggest, the cozy little bar resembles a rock cave. In the hands of a lesser designer this could have been beyond cornball but this theme lounge has definite charm.

The signature-dining outlet is “Shiraz on the Water.” Here you can really see the work and influence of Food & Beverage Director, Eoin O’Donnell. As one would expect, the room is beautiful offering each guest a look of the lake below. Here at Shiraz, O’Donnell offers 1,000 plus labels of wine with 30 selections by the glass. He is absolutely passionate about wine, working on his level three exam in the Court of Masters Sommelier Guild. O’Donnell is a native of Cork, Ireland and a graduate of the Swiss Management Hotel University in Montreux, Switzerland. He has worked in some of Europe’s finest hotels and he is an absolute asset to the Chicagoland area. Absolutely tireless, Eoin spends his precious free hours training as a serious cyclist – by serious I mean logging in well over 100 miles per day! It’s a training regimen that earns him a glass of wine or two whenever he wishes.

The Indian Lake Resort is a great destination for anyone but something that should not be missed by those in Chicago area, visiting, or in the mid-west for that matter. It’s an oasis just a half hour’s drive from the city and just what the doctor ordered.
